I called in as Catie's dad, she called in as my mom, and Brian had to call in as his own pops. When we got back to school the next week, we learned it hadn't worked at all - but hey - we got to catch Vince's first shows.
Pretty cold camping nights in September, and gray days as I recall - though the pool at the campground was still full. Ran out of gas on the way home - hiked to the gas station with a can, and hitched a ride back to the car with a trucker.
Yeah, I think I remember that-I seem to recall tripping balls, searching for the sound of Ripple starting, being very confused-and then looking around at people around me doing the same thing, realizing we were doing the same thing, and laughing hysterically. It was a weird, emotional night; I think this episode, for me anyway, helped get rid of the tension.
We all flew up from Florida for the 1st show since Brent's passing to see what the future held for the Band.
It was the end of one era, and the beginning of another. Something that has happened so many times before.
Just another evolution of The Grateful Dead.
I wasn't terribly impressed with Vince and this 1st show had a strange vibe of course.
I'm sure the same was said of Brent after Keith left.
By the second night we payed much less attention to Brent's absence and much more to the music at hand.
Location
I remember that this was my first show and I knew nothing about the Dead other than "Truckin'" - I was going with a girl that I was absolutely in love with and she paid more attention to the people around us than me. First time I had shrooms from the parking lot and it blew me away. I love this show listening to it now. The girl? Still in touch but many, many miles from me. Bummer.
