I'd been made redundant in London a few months earlier, with a big enough payoff to hit the road. Spent a few months in Australia, and then to California.
Wanted to see Zappa and the Dead 'cos I'd missed Frank in '88 and the Dead 'never' came to the UK.
It was the days before the interweb so I didn't know Zappa had stopped touring (for good). But in LA I saw a poster for the Shoreline run and grabbed a hire car.
Sat on the grass talking to lovely, friendly people, listened to some shit-hot music, with a near perfect set-list, and wondered if it could ever get better than this?
I still remember Jerry noddling for hours(?) before the gig started alone on stage. And dancing like a jack-ass to Just a Little Light.
That night in San Francisco, I parked on the wrong side of the road, and my car got towed...
