I was living in Big Elk Meadows, south of Estes Park, CO when this show was announced. My VW bus was disabled, so I decided to hitchhike to Indianapolis. 30 hours and 26 rides later, I got dropped off right outside Market Square Arena minutes before the show started. You can imagine how stoked I was to actually locate friends from Ohio and get seated before the 1st notes of Bertha. This was probably my second show. It was excellent. Had an exceptional view. One of the best Dead concerts I went to.
Me and my brother (his first show). (He took me to one of their SF concerts around Xmas time in the early 80s, to return the favor. Probably the other best show I went to.)
I hitched from Springfield, IL 90 miles to Champaign/Urbana IL to hook up with my pal who went to school there. I left my beater at home. My pal sez: "You go get Karen and Karen while I go to class and then we can all leave for Indy." "Whadda you mean, pick up the girls, I hitched. I thought you had a car." Yikes! We got a guy to drop me and Karen #1 at one ramp, and my pal and Karen #2 at the next one. We immediately got a ride all the way to Indy, and we couldn't razz our buddies who we expected to be waiting for a ride because they also got a ride within one minute. My 5th show and first with "special enhancement" General Admission show was great.The trip home was a story in itself.
The journey from Bloomington to Indy was spectacular. The winter winds had kicked up early, and the leaves were brilliant. As was our routine, several of us had done our best to play golf the day fo the show instead of school - what went on annually to be known as the Dead Open. Although accounts of those events vary widely the show was exceptional in many ways - for me the most vivid was the "Help is on the Way-Slipnot!-Franklin's Tower segment. So dialed in and pure! The show the following year at Assembly Hall did not include Franklin's Tower which still remains at the top of my favorites
