This was my first show. I was in college and spirited away by a couple of Dead show veterans who peomised me an interesting time. In truth, I don't remember much after the opener, Don't Ease, except for the beauty of Althea and the complexity of the Lost Sailor > Saint - still enduring favorites. I remember the show was pretty mellow, and I remember the easy, friendly groove of the people I met. There was definetly a vibe at this show, and I was hooked. The last thing I remembered was dancing on the steps on my way out of The Spectrum and into the swarming, surging lot singing Don't Ease with a bunch of other folks and none of us really knew the words so we made up lyrics as we made our way. And we laughed and laughed and laughed. I guess I remember more than I thought.
This show has stuck with me for two specifics...firstly, I cannot count how many people told us the first night was just awful...Jerry apparently was down a dose and the band was not happy about it. Secondly, after the show we saw some locals beat the livin' $))*^# out of each other not two blocks from the venue. ouch. However, the show was truly a good one. I remember MANY people feeling rhapsodic afterwards. Me?... I like the slow Jerry tunes. You go man. Peace.
This one was my first also. I remember the Althea like it was yesterday! The Black Peter is also vivid in my head, very nice!
Truly, Pitz

THIS was a Dead show. WOW..!
Good stuff here.

Location
Three days after a sad, shocking death of a 26 year old friend, and the band trots out a slew of songs that laid us low not the least of which was "Black Peter" - thank god they ended with Sugar Magnolia or our little group - plus one stand in for the dearly departed would have committed mass suicide.
What a wild weird emotional show for us - I'm sure people have been in similar situations and my heart goes out to them. Those iconic lyrics, mythical subject matters and songs of loss and death can come right back and bite you in the ass if you are not careful.
May you stay forever young...
