This show smoked. Probably the best of the three Cap Center shows. Althea was super hot. Nothing really special about the setlist. Revolution was a novelty. But the entire 1st and 2nd set were smokin.
I remember two things from this night: Phil singing about Foggy Bottom in Tom Thumb and the epic Terrapin in the second set. So happy to hear such a pristine copy of this show. 80s Dead has its peaks and valleys, and this is one of the peaks. Check it out.
All three of these shows reflected the Grateful Dead's power at that time. They were snap-loc together and on form.
The "Easy To Love You" was pretty hip.
The China>Rider was Ripping Good~!!
Not that it matters but after the spring tour I could only sit back and think of where the band was headed.
“The Omnipotent Grateful Dead!”
Note-perfect, powerful, tender, beautiful and evocative 'Terrapin'; a quite fitting version for an official release entitled 'Terrapin Station.' Were the boys ever playing as well as they were on this tour? Debatable, sure, but the energy they had at their command in the Spring tour of their 25th year was sheer scary genius, and no one can debate that. This was my second show, and the show where I got "on the bus." And I'm happy to say that I never got off (the bus, that is.) I was kind of tired and completely sober through the whole night, and I probably never had a better time. Comparable times, and much stranger ones as well, but not better. That's the boys for 'ya.
This was my second show and first experience. My buddy got puddled in the parking lot independantly, and we proceeded to communicate using only facial expressions for the next 10 hours, and we were back in Terrapin for good or ill again. Uckin fay!!!!
So whatever happened to this museum/showcase/concert venue? that was to be a built? Was it just another pipe dream?
I was taken in as were others, but this CD with it's wonderfully inspired cover and stellar performances continues to be one of my most cherished recordings.
"if you get confused..."
This show absolutely smoked from start to finish. Phil's 50th B-day & the boys were totally on this night. All three of these shows rocked but my favorite tune is Terrapin & this show will stick in my brain FOREVER!!!
I recall people passing notes to one another telling them to sing Happy Birthday to Phil as he came back on stage for the second set. I smile when I listen to this show now and catch glimpses of Jerry playing along on guitar as the crowd sang to Phil.
I love listening to the Mock Turtle Jam post Terrapin Station.
This show was so much fun. I smoked opium for the only time in my life, combined with some liquid, i literally floated my way into the arena. During Sugaree every note that Jerry played formed a crystal over the stage (like supermans house in the first movie). Needless to say I was in an awesome mental space to enjoy this most excellent show.
Happy Birthday Phil!
