I smoked a number with Jerry after the show right on stage. His own, Jerry noted that ours had seeds in it.
Hugh draws and prints his 1st poster. With a handful we walk up to the guy with the briefcase and say "hey, how you doin' look at these" Sam looks, smiles and politely says " nice artwork, but Tim's not with the band anymore. Don't worry though, it will be a great show" we agree, feel relieved and move on. Nice fellow that Sam Cutler.
The New Riders open the show.
Rumor is Jerry has been up for a while recording pedal steel tracks. Later on, denim shirt untucked, just like Annie pictured him, Jerry sits down and plays. I make a photo, a nice one I think, only to see latter in the darkroom I've placed the microphone in the middle of his forehead. I wish I still had that photo, blocked forehead and all.
It's after the show and I watch on stage as bolder fans smoke reefer with the band. Pigpen calls out to Jerry "hey you old fart, share some of those peanuts..."
Back at the farm I say " ...yeah I invited them over to party, but they said they couldn't..."
Whose to say differently?
Is my memory this bad? I was sure this concert was at the MSU Auditorium, not Jenison. But I do remember the New Riders opened. My first show!!
Remember it well...at the field house, small crowd, Mr. Natural, rockin' Johnny B Goode...changed my life that night....

Location
The 3.13.1971 Jenison Fieldhouse show, my first Dead show (having no clue what to expect, an entirely mindblowing experience), was not in Lansing, Minnesota, it was instead in East Lansing, Michigan (on the Michigan State University campus).
