I agree with the comment above, my favorite part of the tape from that show is hearing the laughter from the band while they tried to sing Blackbird. That was a great week with the dead and Bob Dylan too. We refer to the 88 shows as the dust bowl because it was soooo hot and dusty. The next year was the mud bowl, we were slippin' and sliding around in cow fields after one of the shows in the pitch black night with the rain coming down, trying to find our car. Alpine is special. Blackbird is one of the special memories, It still makes me smile real big. :)

That is what made the Dead so great. I hate rehearsed repeated shows. Music of the moment is where it is at. I was so exhauster after four dead shows and a Dylan show and had to work every night after every show was quite an experience. But I would do it again if I could!. You betcha:)

I had to work everyday this week also, and by the final show I was just to fried to go back up to alpine. I was so ticked at myself for missing "Blackbird" 40 miles from home, that I
punished myself by making myself drive me 400 miles to Buckeye the next day.
(It was an alright show)
I was there for all of these shows and definitely agree with X-factor regarding the emotional nature and group consciousness at the end of this show... The Morning Dew, Blackbird, and Brokedown were just unbelievable. Jerry seemed very emotional. These are among the best versions of Morning Dew and Brokedown - and the rare blackbird was killer. Listening to the end of this show sends chills through my spine!
vividly remember some dude that seemed to rise up out of the audience to go on stage and sit down next to jerry during morning dew and was there for 2 or 3 minutes before security came and wisked him away....what a trip! """ nothing left to do but,SMILE
Reading the other messages reminds me that I too went to all four shows and I know I had to work before the first two,at least I had a great motorcyle then and I would make good time from evanston to the shows.I always had great fun at alpine it was my favorite place to see the band.To me these were the glory years.I saw the dead in the early days ,for me I just had more fun at these shows.the great outdoors of the midwest.The open sky and just being out in the middle of knowhere.I loved it,Jai Sat Chit Anand!Look that up.Ok I'll shed some light it means "Truth consciousness and Bliss"
The best of the run. I was at them all. Started the first night on one hit. Second night was 2. Third was at least 3 maybe 4 and this night was 5. The most square meals I've ingested in a five day span ever. I love the sound here. Whatever Heally did made it very unique. My fav's... Roses, Pocky Way, Believe it or Not, He's gone, Dew, Blackbird and Brokedown. Great night!
Me and my buddy drove 40 miles the next morning to get doughnuts at one of my favorite bakeries and the place had closed down.
And sadly, my last Alpine run - One Hell of a Ride!
As I recall, a guy appeared out of the crowd during Jerry's Dew solo. You could see Garcia looking over his glasses as the guy approached him. All the while still ripping and incredible solo. Security (Parish maybe?) walked over and slowly moved the guy backstage. Then I think during Blackbird or Brokedown and couple of girls walked on stage and sat down in front of Brent.; My memory/recollection could be a little off, it was almost 20 yrs ago. Incredibly moving 2nd set. The Dew is without a doublt my all time fav.
The SBDs that circulate for this show are not good. I think Healy experimented with some different sort of vocal reverb.
There are some great AUDs out there though.
This was soooo dusty!!!! My friend got heat stroke and we had to go to Lake Gineva (sp) to cool down...than back at it again. We also got lost in the tapers section and couldn't find our way out! There was some unhappy tapers giving us the old stink eye!

When they messed-up Blackbird, everyone laughed, especially Jerry, and of course, no one cared and loved them more for it, which brought a tear to everyone's eye, especially Jerry, during Brokedown. You can hear it on the tapes. It was the most obvious example of group consciousness that I ever felt at a show.
