...to this site. I remember this concert well. The trip from Connecticut was more fun than the show itself. I agree with vern...but, the trip up to SPAC the next day to watch them in the rain was fun!
At one of the City Island shows (I can't remember whether it was 83 or 84) my friend Mike and I were disgusted with the fact that there was no water available to the crowd except expensive bottled water... so we initiated a little guerrilla action and disconnected the hoses running to several of the concession stands. Before they got them hooked back up, we had gotten a lot of Dead Heads nice and wet, and turned the dusty field into a slippin' slidin' mud party, much improving the whole vibe. :)
I remember that as we were herded across the cattle walk after the show, some cops were saying, "Thanks for the cash, now take your trips someplace else."
It was a trip crossing that bridge ( like a herd of hippies)!!
i cant disagree more with the negative comments. this setting was outstanding the stage with the background of the pennsylvania state capitol building, the rising moon and the swarming insect magnified by the stage lighting was breathtaking. yea there were some obstacles, but it was a venue that rare and different.

I DO remember being on Phils side, He was burning a FATTIE during near mid first set..That I recall, and the HASSLES of Harrisburg City Islands failure to accomodate the Dead Heads. Also people diving in & swimming out the river to get on City Island. Good times, Ok show.
Not nearly as good as 83,the trick was to go on the island the day before and bury all the good shit,
just dig it up the next day, always had cold beer;)
This 1984 gig at City Island, Harrisburg, just wasn't as much fun as the 1983 show for me. The band just didn't seem all gung-ho about playing there, either.
Just my two cents.

it seemed liked the Dead did not want to be there! drove from NJ to Harrisburg. had to cross that long bridge on foot across the Susquhan. River to get to City Island. was a nice, small outdoor venue! there was problems with the Dead from the start! they had a lot of equipment problems. Bobby's strings kept breaking etc. the 1st set was cut REAL short! bob got on the micropphone & said they were going to take a short break. many thought they were going to get the problems fixed & finish the 1st set! after a long wait, the Dead reappeared, played a short 2nd set & left!! then we had to cross that long bridge again, people mooing, because you were like cattle being herded!
