Hard to believe but I had just graduated from 8th grade and my mom just let us run wild through the city. Just by chance we stumbled on the show and the next thing ya know I'm up in a tree catching the sounds. Life would never be the same after that.
Good Times.
I came to the city early June to live on Cole Street with my sister. The Dead were on a flatbed truck, a tiny space by later standards, Jerry on the far left and dressed garishly. Summer Solstice, the whole day full of amazing tribal images, hundreds of pilgrims moving in small groups through the trees, ridges, meadows. A ton of Eucalyptus everywhere. The sound was astonishing. Especially Viola Lee.
Not the polo fields. Well, right next to the polo fields...
Location
The Dead are not in the movie but there is a couple of interviews with people there that day. Interesting movie, showing some Quicksilver and Country Joe & the Fish among others. The movie shows the Haight before it went bad. If you want to see some Dead footage from around this time watch 'Petulia' with George C. Scott. Great ' Viola Lee Blues' clip, although incomplete and rather distorted. Its still a great little clip. Enjoy!
