Didn't they fiddle-fart their way through St Stephen this night? I could swear I remember it. I'll have to check the tape. Sounded like the first time since Live Dead, and they didn't remember it very well.
The whole show was very off-the cuff. The guys were probably exhausted from jet lag and air touring provided by Northern Stage Co. Hi, Andy!
Hey, it's all in the family!
The Anchorage shows were promoted by George and Andy Lichter of Northern Stage Co. (hope I have those names right), and it was supposed to be the first of many bands coming through Anchoragua. Don't know what happened to those plans, but they went all out to show the Dead a good time - float plane trips out to the bush, etc.
During the break on the 19th, I went outside and around the stage end on the auditorium, and there's Phil, taking the air.
Me: "Hey Phil, wanna do a bowl?"
Him: "Aw, no, I can't man."
Me: "So you remember Ground Hog's Day of '69 when the vibes got hostile (http://www.dead.net/show/february-2-1969)?"
Him: "No, I don't remember nothin', man."
Then I asked him about cranking up the bass, and he explained that it wasn't run through the board, but he'd see what he could do.
Then Andy Lichter came out and joins us, and they're talking tech, and I thanked Andy for Northern Stage bringing the Dead to AK. They said they'd be back the next year - yeah right! I didn't see 'em again till Oakland in 1990.

Locations
Yikes! This high school auditorium had something like 30 rows of seats downstairs and 20 rows upstairs (or less!)
Shows took place during summer solstice -- come out after the show and it's daylight in Alaska. (How do you know when it's time to crash?)
During intermission you were allowed to leave the hall... in a state with decriminalized marijuana laws. All the locals dash for their cars during intermission, and the rest of us can't figure out why.
A long hitchhike to get there from southern California.
