Your friend, the lizard...where do you keep him?
From the East coast to the West by thumb in under two weeks. "That's a long damn way to hitchhikking, why in the world would you do something like that" the last guy to pick me up (around Portland) asked. I simply replied "Cuz there aint nothin for the head like the good ol Grateful Dead!" He decided to check it out and I saw him many times in many venues after that. So Jay if you're reading this thanks for the ride brother and you're welcome for being introduced to the Dead.
I recall that the floor got real crowded for Dylan and thinking, "wow, you guys waited up there in the seats until now? Seemed like missed something." Did Dylan play the last few with a broken and dangling string?
Late for the bus, but enjoying the ride ever since. Over the rail to the spongy floor as the band started Feel Like a Stranger. Felt a bit like a stranger, but good vibe erased that. At each and every Eugene show after that. Sad when Veneta return was cancelled. Yes the Reagan knew skywriter was an interesting addition
This was the second and last time I saw The Dead. That summer my friends and I took a lot of LSD. It came on sheets printed with little globes of blue and gold. At the concert we saw a big banner with the same globe on it. I guess we weren't the only ones. That was the best time of my life.
Was living in Seattle and it was ALWAYS nice to head down to Eugene. Didn't quite live up to the magic of the Mac Court show in '78, but the nice day in an outdoor venue was great, the whole crowd singing "He's Gone" with skywriter's making it clearly about Reagan. Mildly magical. Drove down with a couple of friends who had never seen 'em before, stayed with friends in Corvallis. My wife stayed home with a baby in the belly - last show before fatherhood jumped me!
The Dead sets were very uninspiring (5 minute Playin' !?). I've listened to every available recording of this show over the last 20 years and just cannot get into it. The weather was wonderful, hot as hell. I wasn't interested in the Dylan set at the time but time has been kind to the Dylan set at least and it is a fantastic set in its own right, I'd listen to it any time. Forget the Dead sets from this date, but make an effort to find and listen to the Dylan set, in fact e-mail me if you need it. It is the best of the six sets they did together (by far). Best arrangements, best playing.
This was indeed a good show although when Dylan joined them the band had a hell of a time trying to stay in the pocket with Dylan's odd rhythmic delivery. They did manage to stay in the pocket, no small feat considering they were a backup band for "god", but Dylan ended up having to adjust to them. Twas a fun show and it set the stage, so to speak, for a series of subsequent Dead shows at Autzen in the following years.
I was 17 when I went to this show.my first dead show.I have seen Dylan many times since then(again this Oct.)this is still the show that is most memorable.me and my friends tried zippy the pin head.WOW.I would love to acquire a recording of this show.If anyone knows where I could get a copy I would love to hear for you.
