There was a guy with the saddest face sitting on the hood of his car and his buddy says "cheer up man, you're going to see Jerry!" The guy's face slowly broke into the biggest grin. The place went bananas when Here Comes Sunshine opens. There was someone flying his ultralight plane above the crowd and Bobby said something like "Jerry says it's one of those Texas mosquitos" or something like that. The most relaxed show I ever went to.
He said he was an artist but he really painted billboards
I remember Bobby saying "Jerry thinks it's a Texas Dragon fly/mosquito"
Fun afternoon shows. I think they started at 1 p.m. and 12:30p.m. respectively. Why would they start the next day show earlier? Need some recovery time. Bounced back and had fun.
I remember that ultralight "buzzin" around. Hear Comes Sunshine really set the pace for the whole show. Wasn't there some guy on stilts? The circus truly came high steppin' into town! Sunset was beautiful and it was a magical day! We were lucky to have been there, or were we really there at all.
this was really a remarkable weekend. being from the east it sure was nice to see an outdoor show in the middle of winter. anyhoo... in the days before internet and things buying tix the oldfashoned way over the phone i lucked out and was able to get reserved tix. there was a very small reserved section , i'd say less than 2,000, so any seat in there was great. i have awsome photos of both shows, some with jerry looking right at me, and some candid ones of him before the show laughing and talking. funny thing about daylight shows is it seemed like everyone really didnt let loose, you know your much more free under the cover of night. one more thing jerry wore the exact same clothes both days. black sweats with a hole in the knee
You know those openers that are meant just for you, well it certainly seemed like they understood our plight of weather to make it to this show!! Oh I could tell a story about getting to and from this show from Iowa through a blizzard from Texas through New Mexico where they closed the interstate but we trudged on through since we had a 4WD rental minivan and we knew how to cruise through snow (being from IA), but I will save it for my book. :)
Getting back in time for semester finals at U of I was not easy either, but being there was so sweet. Camped at a reservation the night before and slept on the ground by the fire. We had planned on being at the 12/5 show, but got delayed due to road closures and semis jack-knifing.
The space from this show is really creepy and tripped out! Like a war was occuring. Dead Hour did highlights and then I downloaded the whole show before they yanked stuff off the LMA. But stream it, it's a pretty cool show.
The space WAS amazing from this show, and included in this very fine installment of the GDH.

THE LAST TIME->
Hey Sunnydaze I was also stuck in that nasty storm. Me and my roommate were driving out from Indiana and at about Amarillo, TX the snow started coming down. We made it as far as Santa Rosa, NM and then they closed the Interstate. We stayed the night there and didnt get to Phoenix till about 7pm the next day. Thank god they waited till the next day to break out HCS. Whew!
It was my favorite show of all time! My brain will never be the same.Me and 4 of my buddies came from chicago. It was the best weekend of my life! The venue was top notch! there was nothing but good vibes all weekend! I swore I witnessed heaven that day. Best drum circle ever up at the top of the hill! I could see the energy pooring out of people. Nobody had to speak. You just had to look at one another to communicate. Some of the most beautiful girls I ever seen in my life! My one buddy swore bob weirs face was in the form of a cloud in the sky. He still swears it to this day.Everyone in the band was tight! Most insane war space ever, I was relieved when they came out of it,and the transition into the last time was the best I ever heard! Followed by an outstanding China Doll. That weekend was what it was all about!ROCK ON!
it ultimately was my first show, tried to catch them from leaving Virginia in October, then got snowed in at fort Collins Colorado, then drove 36 hours in a blizzard into the camp grounds out side Tempe, took the bypass at sorrico NM. through fort Apache white river, traded some nuggets for the show on the 6th from some one who broke down outside Albuquerque, and was determined to get to my first show, bought a 50 pound bag of salt, and put it on the front floorboards of the 72 VW bus I was driving. What a show.....I think my photo was in the yearbook on that one....
This was my first show of the three I was lucky enough to experience. I was only 11 years old. I also remember the man on stilts and the "crazy sunset". As the sun went down I got cold, my Mom and I stood up so I could wrap the blanket we were sitting on around me. Then this guy who was with his girlfriend right behind us came up and gave me a heather grey sweatshirt with a small steal your face embroidered on it. He also gave me a $20 dollar bill and he gave me some words of advice. I'll always remember that. So Thanks for the sweatshirt, the $20 and the words of advice. :)
