Did Garcia REALLY fall to his knees during the passionate solo in "Hard To Handle???? I don't think we'll ever know for sure.
I remember it being so hot and crowded in the Palladium that i almost passed out. It's the only Dead concert i was hoping to be a short one.
I'm 6'4 and watched Garcia intently that night as I really "got it" at this particular show. I don't recall him dropping to his knees - but I will check with my brother and some friend who were also there and ask if anybody remembers.
we wanted some air and looked for the balcony-heading, instead, right into the gurls bathroom complex. nice palace; main room was also the "blues brothers" concert in the movie, front area looks like the "dancing with the stars" set...maybe that's another nice LA place, dunno.
Born in 1971, sorry - this is my favorite recording of the boys at their best - Loser (listen to the solo) and Hard to Handle (yeah, solo again, but Pig's vocals are killer!) are two of the greatest recordings ever (sorry Wolfgang and Ludwig). I did manage to see them 9 times pre-95, but, to me, the Dead 68-71 is their prime!
...The best version of Hard Too Handle the Dead ever did was this show -- was it the eclipse that night? It is amazing the consensus that was there, even before Phil fingered it for release or the Jerrry Knee rumor.
IMHO, the next best edition is RI Auditorium, Providence, 4/71. Give it a play if you love the Dead jamming H2H.

The St. Stephen is classic, without any jam after. Hard to Handle and Lovelight are amazing.

I remember they played "Casey Jones", so unless they also played it the night before, this is the show I attended. What I remember from this, my 2nd G.D. show, was that I bought a bootleg album for $5, which turned out to be pretty good, lending the cover to somebody at some point, to roll a joint on, which I referred to as "a worthy purpose".
