the umpteen bazillions currently being flushed down the toilet attempting to interdict the flow of certain substances that some individuals choose to ingest, as well as the staggering cost of administrating the criminalization of that elective behavior that otherwise directly impacts no one other than the ingestor, and the substantial tax windfall of dragging a massive black market into the mainstream might be repurposed to more useful applications such as;

improving educational opportunities, including returning arts to mainstream curricula
providing basic healthcare support to all
providing at least basic network access to every American
and perhaps subsidizing free concerts (hey, we gotta have some fun, right?)

Before anyone gets too bent out of shape about this, it's not so much that I'm an advocate of substance ingestion of whatever stripe, but that I'm opposed to the criminalization of what is otherwise elective, self-contained individual behavior. Especially when that posture is costing us billions of dollars a year for which we get what? Billionaire drug lords with private armies? Didn't we learn anything from the 1920's? You can't legislate morality, and it's a mistake to try to do so. It's absurd to pretend that any action by any individual that causes no direct, measurable harm to any other individual is somehow a "crime." Wasn't this country founded on the notions of freedom and liberty?

Oh, and what in the world will all those gangbangers and thugs do to make money instead, once we've eviscerated their principal source of revenue? If you wipe out their business model I suspect that most of them will just dry up and blow away.
