Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music from 1976, 1979 and 1984.
Our first stop this week is on the excellent Fall Tour of 1976, at the 3rd-to-last show on 10/1/76 in Indianapolis. From that show we have the end of the first set: Brown-Eyed Women, It's All Over Now, Scarlet Begonias, Promised Land.
Next up is the first half of the second set from 12/3/79 in Chicago, a long sequence featuring Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain, Samson and Delilah, Terrapin Station>Playing In The Band.
Lastly this week is music from the final night of a six night run at the Berkeley Community Theater on 11/3/84, where we have the start of the second set. This run was filled with interesting song selections, including these last two songs: Feel Like A Stranger>Cumberland Blues, Gloria>Why Don't We Do It In The Road. These shows were the first Grateful Dead shows featuring an official tapers' section.

Thank you David - nice treat. I don't recall hearing any copy as clear as this (I have an old audience cassette somewhere in the basement!). Great sound and fun jamming. Like a lot of folks, I enjoy the early/mid 80's sound and evolving song selection and would welcome a release from that era.
Lovin' the echo effect on Stranger. Also, Jerry's solo is blazing (granted, par for the course for this tune). Have always loved his solos on Stranger--they can be so jazzy and so funky. I think I've watched the opening of "Downhill from Here" a few hundred times just to watch Jerry's solo on that Stranger. If you can watch that and say he doesn't have jazz chops, you're high on cleaning products.
Morrison has always scared me. He wasn't a happy guy.
"When the music's over" scared me good back in college...i thought he was advocating mass suicide via hara-kiri.
and of course "The End" is not for the children.
Ahhh, can't wait to end that '84 clip.

I think it's nearly obvious that 10-01-76 is not only good enough to release, but it would be a smash. I think there is a big hole on my shelf, that only love for '76 can fill (sets, medleys, shows).... More expertly played Blues For Allah material, please. I appreciated Blair's discussion of Terrapin on his blog, I agree that it represented a big change (+/-, imho) in the band's studio sound. But I still sense that Blues For Allah, with its significant amount of fantastic, original material, is under-recognized as the band's high water mark in the studio. They were out playing that music, often and well rehearsed, consistently for the better part of a year, so I would love to hear more from the road.
Nice selection from a real good show: fresh and sharp! Thanks for rekindling some fond memories.
