Tapers Section By David Lemieux

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll have music from 1970, 1972 and 1982.

Our first selection this week is the mighty fine version of Dark Star from 1/2/70 at the Fillmore East in New York City, played just six weeks before the majestic version played on 2/13/70 at the same venue. The master reel here cuts at very end of the second verse of Dark Star, an unfortunate cut, but fortunately Bear had recorded these shows to cassette as well as reel, so the there is music to fix this cut should this show ever be released on CD.

Next is music from exactly two years later on 1/2/72 at Winterland, when the Grateful Dead left their equipment set up from the 12/31/71 New Year's gig, took a much needed rest on 1/1/72, and resumed playing on 1/2/72, to start what is arguably the finest year in Grateful Dead touring history. From this show we have the show-closing sequence of Not Fade Away > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad > Not Fade Away, One More Saturday Night.

Our final selection this week is from a decade later on 4/11/82 at Nassau Coliseum, where we have the start of the second set featuring Bertha > Samson And Delilah ; Never Trust A Woman ; He's Gone > Truckin'. This is a fine tour with some spectacular shows (see: 4/6/82 Philly) plus the first-ever appearance of Jerry and Bob on Letterman, where they performed a couple of acoustic numbers. Although they didn't try to levitate Jerry at this appearance, it was more fun than a frog in a glass of milk.

Be sure to stop by next week for more great music from deep within the vault. As always we encourage you to write to us at the address below with questions or comments about the Tapers' Section.

nice Dark star

Thanks for the 1/2/70 Dark Star. I hadn't heard it before. There's a sweet embryonic Sugar Magnolia Jam in there before switching to the more well known named theme. Sounds like TC is still in the mix, too. Thanks again!

Thank you!

Thank you so much for these tracks. The 1/2/70 Dark Star is one of the first jams I heard that truly turned me into a Deadhead - I never get tired of this DS. Also thank you for the beautiful 1982 sequence. I'm one of those Heads who loves the early 80's (cant get enough of Brent from 1979-1985) . This Bertha made my day. David you are the best!

Dark Star

oh, yeah, I call the quiet jam in Dark Star the "graveyard jam" because it reminds me of walking around a graveyard at night.... not in a bad way. Great Star

Heart flutter

The dialogue mentions the *possibility* perhaps of releasing 1 2 70 and possibly 4 6 82? Bring it on, and Leave it On!

I would highly support each of these releases and 4 6 would be the first show I attended to be released.

As always, thanks for the tunes and for everything you do getting the music out. This is going to be a great year for official releases...
