Grateful Dead
January 2- January 8, 2012

Welcome back, and Happy New Year everyone! This week we cover almost 20 years in Grateful Dead history with music from 1970 to 1989.
Our first stop this week is 4/3/70 in Cincinnati, one of the few tapes we have in the vault from outside of California. Fortunately what we do have is mostly excellent (1/2&3 Fillmore East, the January tour, 2/13&14, 5/2, 5/15). From 4/3 we have Hard to Handle, Dancing In The Street, Me and My Uncle, Friend of the Devil, Deep Elem Blues, Candyman, with those last three songs being acoustic Dead.
Next is music from 4/1/86 in Providence, RI, the start of the second set featuring Shakedown Street>Estimated Prophet>Eyes Of The World. This was drawn from the Beta PCM digital master tape, which for the most part sound pretty good.
Lastly this week is the entire first set from 4/5/89 in Ann Arbor, MI, with Feel Like A Stranger > Franklin's Tower ; New Minglewood Blues ; Candyman ; Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again ; Far From Me ; Dupree's Diamond Blues ; Let It Grow > U.S. Blues. A couple of rarities in this set are the Dupree's, which was not played too much at this time, and the U.S. Blues set-closer.
Be sure to join us next week for more tunes from the vault. And as always, we welcome and encourage your comments and questions, sent to the email address below.

Dave,
Thanks for the weekly samplers! Very cool way to bring the community together to listen to some gems and have some lively discussions.
In response to a post I saw where folks were arguing '60's versus 70's Dead':
Personally, I think it's all good fun, but, in the end, an impossible debate to decide what configuration of the GD is 'best'. In fact, I don't think you can say '70's Dead' and describe anything accurately. Listening to Shows from 1970 and 1979 is like hearing two different bands. On my weekly show, The Dead Zone, WRHU.ORG, 88.7FM, I'm currently exploring the music the Dead performed in Europe (it's a way of commemorating Europe 72). Anyway, after playing the album Europe 72 on the first two shows of the year, I started the commemoration by playing March 28, 1981, Essen, West Germany. Great show (listen esp. to Greatest Story, Shakedown). Anyway, comparing the sound of '81 to '72 is fun, but I don't think there is a way to actually say 'this is better'. I'm listening to the Shakedown Dave posted this week, and it's a sweet example of that mid 80's sound, but so different from the '67 material. I guess what I'm saying is it's probably a more reasonable debate to discuss the quality of performances within a given tour or year (as we used to do back in the days of going to shows and trading tapes!).
