April 16 - April 22, 2012

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music spanning 15 years of Grateful Dead history, 1974-1989.
Our first selection this is one of my favorite pieces of music in general, a 1974 version of Playing In The Band, this one specifically from 9/18/74 in dijon, france.
Next is music from the summer of 1981, specifically the start of the show on 7/7/81 in Kansas City. From this show we have New Minglewood Blues>Bertha>Dancing In The Street, Big Railroad Blues, El Paso, To Lay Me Down. You'll notice that this is the old Disco arrangement of Dancing In The Street, and I have no idea what prompted them to play it for the first time in more than 18 months , but I can hear here why they left it alone after this. They did revive it in 1984, but in its original arrangement.
Lastly this week is a timely selection from 7/18/89 at Alpine Valley. Timely because this Thursday, April 19, you can see this entire show in movie theaters across the country in pristine video. From this show we have the start of set 2 featuring Sugar Magnolia > Scarlet Begonias ; Man Smart (Woman Smarter) ; Eyes Of The World. Go to the movies! You'll dig it.
See you here next week with more tunes from the vault.

Great interplay between Jerry and Phil @ around 20% of the way in. There were times, not just moments, when Phil drove the band. Love this recording.
some of the most clearest sound "to lay me down" for a perfect meditation. Thanks!
non sequiter: any fans of 8/31/78? Excellent Half-Step, Candyman...
something about memory and it not being that good.
the disco version of this song has a great jamming section. Later versions (like in GD85) were so short by comparison.
I have the first set on tape somewhere at home...never heard the 2nd set (at least not yet).
"To tell sweet lies one last time
and say goodnight"
Goodnight, xo!
