Welcome back to the Tapers' Section as we roll toward the end of October. This week we'll check out some more of the March, 1972 shows in New York, and some 1991 Dead.
Or first selection this week is from 3/23/72 Academy of Music in New York, with the bulk of the first set, featuring China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Black Throated Wind ; Chinatown Shuffle ; Brown Eyed Women ; Beat It On Down The Line ; Cumberland Blues ; Looks Like Rain ; Mr. Charlie ; Tennessee Jed ; El Paso ; You Win Again. That's a very rare show-opening China>Rider, and little surprises like that are always fun to find on a tape. Also, like the selection we played here last week from the same run of shows, Jerry plays some nice pedal steel on Looks Like Rain.
Our next couple of selections are from the Albany, NY shows on the Spring Tour of 1991. For anyone who'd been at the Cap Center shows just before this, walking into the Knickerbocker we found a big surprise in that Bruce's piano was absent. Due to prior commitments, Bruce was absent from these three shows and the next three at Nassau. From the second night in Albany on 3/24/91 we have the second set opening Samson And Delilah ; China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Looks Like Rain ; He's Gone. A good, if somewhat standard, sequence for the time, with the exception of the set-opening Samson.
Lastly this week, from the final night in Albany on 3/25/91, we have the end of the second set featuring Space > The Other One > Black Peter > Throwing Stones > Playing In The Band Reprise; Turn On Your Lovelight. A couple of very rare things took place at the end of the show, the first being the Throwing Stones>Playing reprise set-ender, and the second being the encore of Lovelight. It was always nice when things got mixed up a bit, keeping things fresh. After playing most of the past six months with Bruce as a keyboard co-pilot, Vince Welnick held his own at these shows without Bruce.

MY UNCLE ATTENDED OHIO UNIVERSITY FROM 1965-1969 AND COME TO FIND OUT HE ATTENDED THE SATURDAY NOVEMBER 23, 1968 SHOW AT MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM OHIO UNIVERSITY IN ATHENS, OHIO. HE REALLY IS NOT A DIE HARD GRATEFUL DEAD FAN LIKE I AM, BUT HE REMEMBERS THAT THERE WAS TWO KEYBOARD PLAYERS AND TWO DRUMMERS WITH A TOTAL OF SEVEN BAND MEMBERS THAT NIGHT. HE DISSTINCTIVELY REMEMBER THAT SET UP, BECAUSE AT THAT TIME HE HAD NEVER SEEN TWO DRUMMERS AND TWO KEYBOARD PLAYERS ON THE SAME STAGE AT THE SAME TIME. HE SAID IT SOUNDED GREAT.COME TO FIND OUT THAT THIS WAS ACTUAL TOM CONSTANTEN FIRST OFFICIAL SHOW WITH THE GRATEFUL DEAD. ALTHOUGH HE IS OFFICALLY CLASSIFIED AS BEING A BAND MEMBER FROM OCTOBER 1968 - JANUARY 1970 THIS WAS HIS FIRST SHOW. MY UNCLE ALSO TOLD ME THAT HE REMEMBERS FROM THAT SHOW THAT THE ONE KEYBOARD PLAYER SANG THE MAJORITY OF THE SONGS THAT NIGHT. MY UNCLE NOT KNOWING MUCH ABOUT THE GRATEFUL DEAD MUST BE TALKING ABOUT PIGPEN SINGING MOST OF THE NIGHT. I WAS WONDERING IF ANY FELLOW DEAD HEAD OUT THERE HAD A SET LIST OF THIS SHOW OR EVEN MAYBE A COPY ON TAPE OF THE SHOW. JUST A LITTLE SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT IN THE TAPERS SECTION AS WE APPROACH NOVEMBER 23.
Oh now this is tasty! Love me some 91! Don't remember much from the spring tour, other then that I was there...most of the time. Thanks for this weeks music as 91 has some gems for sure. Take care all.
Since setlists are hard to come by (read too lazy to go upstairs and check), I don't know if the China>Rider on Dick's Picks 30 is from 3/25 or 3/28 but it contains one of the most comical Jerry screams ever at the end of I Know You Rider. That alone makes it one of my favorites. Whoever said 'Dick couldn't pick a pumpkin'? He certainly was prone to hyperbole, but he knew his Primal Dead as evidenced by these releases!
these '72 shows r great but pale in comparison to 3/25.also known as Dick;'s Picks 30.#30 included a whole set with the great Bo Diddley making it possibly the best DP of all.

Glad we have been able to pick and stash soo much music.
Just thankful to have as many recordings i can dig out what i choose to hear.
