Song Answer Description:

It’s always amazed us that after the excellence of the 2/13/70 version, the Grateful Dead came back the next night, on 2/14/70, and played yet another spectacular "Dark Star" in the early show, no less. And even more amazing is that they still had the energy later on 2/14/70 to play one of the most famous and inspired jam sequenced in Grateful Dead history.

great selection

I was kind of hoping this would be some kind of lost Dark Star we never knew about.
Not keyboards in the mix, so that narrows that date down to a smaller time period, and they still were using the "scratcher".

Beautiful Feelin' groovy jam towards the end. That is the give away for the year.

Thanks David

Free music AGAIN!!!

Stuff like this is why I got on the bus in '81 and why I am and always will be a Deadhead. Can't wait to see Mickey's new band in Phoenix Dec. 6th at a venue that only holds 400 (happy) people!

Bear Must Have Been High

I've heard that story about Bear saying there was not an early and late show on 2/14/70. I can testify to the fact that there were two shows that night, as was the case most nights at the Fillmore East. I was at the early show and the set list is exactly as posted by others above. It was the one time I saw "Live Dead" played straight through and it was awesome. I have a fine SBD copy of the whole show (missing only the horrible cut in The Eleven). I had friends who went to the late show that night, which Dix Pix justifiably chronicled.

Of course

Owsley went to his grave telling everyone there were no a and b shows that night. Just 2 sets. I have to believe him. He was there, I wasn't.

Deadbase wrong?

My copies of deadbase (Vols. VII through X) show no 2-14-70 Dark Star. Has there been an updated set list released?

My completely uneducated guess would have been 11/8/69 based upon the fact I'm always guessing wrong and couldn't care less 'cause it's fun just getting the free downloads.

My reasoning is:

1. Pre-Keith & Donna (pre-'71)
2. Younger sounding voices (definitely pre 70's)
3. Uncle John Jam (or tease) between 2 Dark Stars (only 11/08/69)
4. Appears to have a lead into Stephen (happened on 11/08/69)
5. Dead.Net will post date on 11/8/11 (42nd anniversary of show and also my wedding anniversary - 31 years)

If I am right, and I win, be it hereby known that it is perfectly acceptable to give a GD Europe '72 t-shirt as a wedding anniversary gift to your spouse.

If I am wrong as usual and i don't win as usual, she still gets an awesome Dark Star to listen to as a gift, making it a winning day anyway.

As it is written, so shall it be.

1. yes pre Keith 2. younger

1. yes pre Keith
2. younger sounding voices yes, not necessarily PRE-70s.
3. It isn't the Uncle John's jam, its a Feelin' Groovy jam, which they did in Dark Star for about 2 years.
4. Sounds to me like St. Stephen is next too...
5. Congrats on your anniversary....

And Yet Another...

They appear to be filling in the years in which no songs were offered in 2010.

There have already been songs from 1976, 1979, 1985, and 1992 this year. These years were not represented last year.

Damn, where's the Like button?

Didn't catch the missing years from last year to this year. I can make a pivot table for that!

Two of the songs that appeared last year were officially released this year:
Shakedown Street 4/6/82 on Road Trips 4.4
He's Gone 5/4/72 on Europe '72: The Complete Recordings

He's Gone "B"

Of course the version of "He's Gone" from 5/4/72 Paris that was download-able last year was the "B" version which was probably not really intended for distribution. I suspect that they had already made the decision to release Europe '72 by November 2010 so they did not want to let that track out.

I also suspect that the decision to provide the 4/6/82 Philadelphia version of "Shakedown Street" as part of 30 Days of Dead 2010 was made before it was decided to officially release the entire show as Road Trips 4.4.

This is all pure speculation, of course.

But, I do think that it indicates that the tracks that are being made available (30 Days, Taper's Section, or Jam of the Week) are from shows that are being evaluated for release. As to whether they provide tracks that are possible release candidates or tracks that may never be officially released is another issue...

At least we may have some idea of where they are poking around in The Vault...

interesting thing about 30 days

There has been nothing from 1968, 1974 or 1977. 1967 and 1970 have been very popular compared to the number of official releases from those years. Total of 39 includes the 32 from last year plus the 7 so far this year.

30 Days...

I think everybody should just start posting their favorite version of the given tune for each day without specifying that its NOT the day's answer!

Winterland Arena, San Fransisco, CA 2/24/74

The comment below mine is the right answer to the level playing-field issue!

A tough one ...

I would guess this one is from 1970 something, or perhaps 1968 before TC joined, because he's not audible here. But I still would say 1970. Unsure of exact date.

In an effort to maintain equality for all here, I once again request that one of our comrades please post the winning answer so that all of us have a level playing field upon which to be redistributed some of these wonderful prizes. That way we all win.

What are you talking about???

It is level. Just like Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy. But, some people are better at word puzzles, or trivia. Still a level field. You just dont wanna do the work. I dont know any Dark Star as soon as I hear it. But I can narrow it down based on the keyboards, and other distinguishing characteristics.

I dont mind giving clues, Ive given them myself. But I don't think the answer needs to be just put out there--wheres the fun in that.

This isnt just a straight up raffle where you only need to enter to win. You need to have some knowledge. I mean seriously, finally theres some payoff to my 30 plus years of O/C behavior towards Dead music.

If you want the answer fine, just stop cloaking your requests in some type of appeal to equality.

Never thought of looking there for something this early. Good ingenuity! Very cool vid too.

Thought I'd never get this one, and only way I figured it out was after noticing a discrepancy between database searches, and dug in from there until I located a matching stream elsewhere.
