This 30+ minute version of Playing In The Band is one of the best versions of this song from 1972, a year that featured remarkably strong versions virtually every night. In a rare move, this Playing In The Band was the second set’s big jam. No Dark Star or Other One; rather, this Playing acted as the jam vehicle for the night, and certainly holds up as a major player of the second set jam canon. There is a cut in the master reel on this version, but that’s to be expected when a song runs longer than 30 minutes.

It songs like these that are better than just OK. I can promise you, nothing beats a long version of a song to help those blues fade away.
I enjoyed Phil's opening tuning before the first set (and then you can hear him apologize @1:43 when they were trying to tune the guitar from the piano). It's so surreal listening to with high-quality, noise canceling headphones.

Man I bet the person doing these selections has been to more dead shows then anyone. How would they know how these songs are so special otherwise?. This really brings back memories of a certain member who would always jump in and start singing unexpectedly. Wonder if Jerry liked that action? My gut instinct is negatory,but looking back, some of the "off a little on the singing here and there" were also some of the most wonderful instumental songs. It is just the human conditon, we are all mistake making machines.
So anyway thank you for these selections. It is a walk down memory lane. I think I may have been at this particular show and I will be excited to learn which concert.

Most of the archive sources have it as a monster jam in the middle of the second set. One partial source ends with a 20 minute PITB, but it's cut off. Deadlist shows PITB as the set one closer, but contains only partial info. Either way, I think we all found the right show and I know I'm happy to have this download. It's a gift.
totally off subject but my husband wants me to try to find a stellar version of morning dew he heard once and the only clue he can give me is a nice long semi up beat jam at the end of the song. any suggestions on your favorite morning dew? Go.... :D

I filtered iTunes by longest GD songs and this one came up in my top 15. The SBD has a very smooth 19 second patch done by the CMaster. If it is the 2nd longest as stated below, the longest must only be a few seconds longer because the official PITB from the GD Movie Soundtrack is 31:21. Lots of Chuck Berry at this show but they didn't let it rock for at least a year and a half later as far as I'm concerned.

You'll be OK if you keep trying. There are a number of ways to deal with the problem if you want to give it one more shot. I started by looking for long set one closers in late '73-'74 (most seemed to be in '74, before "Seastones"). Not there. They were not long enough! Went back in time and found this killer jam, as someone mentioned, in the middle of a second set.
There was only one Playin' from that era that was more than 30 minutes, and only one that was longer than that one and it was 46 minutes.
I'm aware of the longest version at around 46 minutes - I just can't seem to find this slightly shorter version.
I'm all confused.

It occurred to me once I found it that this version sounds a lot like the one from the Veneta show, which I've listened to and watched many times. Similar sound and feel, but 12 minutes shorter.
I was off a little bit there but I must admit two clues did end of hitting me when I saw this venues location. OK then .. can't wait for tomorrows.

Sweet thirty-minute jam. Impressed with some of the instant guesses. I agree that a mind-melting Other One would be a welcome addition to the 30 days.
This PITB and the "He Was a Friend of Mine" are probably my favorites so far this month, the first for the long jam and the second for the beautiful version of an old tune I don't hear too often. Thoughts?

1972-1997, was the official name, generally called "The Omni" for short.
The venue list on dead.net only lists "The Omni." So the Omni Coliseum would appear to be redundant.
The drop menu said you could choose from just "The Omni" or "Omni Coliseum." I chose the former as GD Setlists and Archive.org both had yesterday's venue as just "The Omni." No mention of the word "Coliseum" on either site. Dead.net has yesterday's winner choosing "04/02/1990 - Omni Coliseum." They are incorrect then and should give credit to all those who answered "The Omni."

nice choice. I have this one on my harddrive. Listened to it last week sometime. The mix I have is a little different, and there isn't a cut in the music around 11:35 like in this track.

I probably have 90% of the Playings from 72-74, so I know I have heard this, but I can't really narrow it down. Jerry's playing is particularly aggressive during the spacy stuff, so I am thinking late-73 or 74. Not even going to try on this one.
