...why this year has such a singular sound. Brent's "piano" is a dead giveaway for one thing. Weakest year of this decade, and weird sound...like Phil's bass.
1982 has always been one of my favorite years. The strech of shows from late July through mid August are one of the GD's best runs ever. And Phil's underpinning is fantastic in the early 80s. I'm sorry, I just don't understand when some folks give the early 80's a bad rap. But that's one of the benefits of being a dead head, we have 30 yrs to choose from to call our favorites.

...'Let It Grow's from this year are particularly SPEEDY, it took 'em a couple years to bring them back down to earth again.
That after the third time listening to the same Let It Grow (in between the 50 others I sampled) Charlie Miller is the man.

Unfortunately, during the year this song comes from, Phil decided to stop using his Tiger look-alike Irwin bass and he switched to a Fender Jazz bass and a couple of other odd no-name basses that just didn't match his style. The jazz pickups didn't produce the punchy sound that his custom Alembic basses did. This caused the Phil Zone to go flat, and on most of the tapes during this era (including the Dick's Picks release), Phil's bass work is nearly completely buried in the mix. There was no high end to his playing, just a bunch of muddy, under-driven bass notes. His signature sound was gone.
Phil fans rejoiced the following year when he started playing Modulus 6-string basses with great PUs. The distinct bass runs and head-splitting bombs returned to the Phil Zone.

This was definately a toughy...A few things quickly narrowed it down for me though, the first of all as in any case is playing the Name that Keyboard player game to determine the era, which I widdled down to 79-90-The Mydland era. I then began to isolate the sound of Jerry's guitar, which is undoubtedly 'Tiger'. I then noticed the amount of overdrive or distortion Jerry is using, something that became more signature of early 80's forward (did not start overdriving his signal until around 77) After some long and close listening, I came up with 87, and more specifically Irvine meadows 4-18-87. Now I may be wrong, and probably am, but that is how I arrived at my conclusion, Im sure there are more scientific methods that can be used but I used my available resources...my ears, and they led me to that. Hope Im right I Love That HOODIE!!

Ceriasly is right. I had the correct year from the beginning, but missed it the first time through. Felt like a fool when I found the right version on my second pass. There are some good clues in these messages. The one that prompted the zombie comment is a really helpful one if you need it.
This would've been real tough for me. Most of the 80's sound the same to me, and there were a ton of LIG's played in that decade. And I gotta get in line for Black Friday!! NOT!
My clue: This town is known for its odd-shaped pizzas and amphibiously-named rock club.
Jerry's speedy Spanish guitar licks at the beginning are pretty key here for picking out the right one.
Heading up to the mts. for the weekend so I will not be playing again till Monday. Opens it up more for the rest of you.

I tried to download the mp3's but all I get when I hit "save as" is a thing that tries to get me to buy a Quicktime Pro account for $29.99. Is it truly a free download or do I have to have that to get the song? Am I doing something wrong?? Anybody??
Be sure to right click and pick "save link as" then once it downloads to your download folder right click and hit "open containing folder" What I do then is drag to into itunes and I am able to listen from there. Good luck.
Did you right-click the link to the file and choose "Save As"?
It's possible you left-clicked the link, then tried to choose "Save As" from the File menu in Quicktime after the Quicktime Player opened the streamed file.

Thanks.....you were exactly right. I was trying to download the stream while it was playing on QT. Simply right clicking on the link worked fine. I guess I am old and in the way :)

Argh, we are getting too close to the end of the month, and so many wonderful tunes left unplayed. I guess I should just be thankful for the free musical nuggets already dispersed...in any event, i am dreaming of a lovely, dreamy Crazy Fingers before the music stops. Maybe a blistering, spacy Other One...or how about a Stella!
So far, I have particularly liked the super long Etstimated>He's Gone, the Spanish Jam>Wharf Rat, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Looks Like Rain>Might As Well.
I've noticed as well that there have been no cover songs, either last year or this. Traditionals arranged by the GD, yes, but no straight up covers. I suppose that means the month cannot end with a tearjerking It's All Over Now, Baby Blue ... can it?
Last year, someone posted a link that collected all 30 November downloads. Is there something like that this year?
I am compiling the CD's, naming and tracking the songs, and releasing an archived file with all 30 days, artwork, ect after the 30 days is up.
this old building down. I put my skills to use and with a little luck I got it on my second guess. The sound of the instruments makes easy for me to hone in the year. I'm fond of the band sound quality and playing from this era so I guess that helped too. Happy searching and remember, forget about the dead, they will not follow you.

Here's a song that a times could be a real drag. If the band wasn't tight, Bob would drag them through a pretty painful 12 minutes or so. This is an example of how great the song can be. Thanks David, fine choice.

Unless Brent was providing harmonies from up above, I don't think this can be post-Brent.
If you listen carefully to the type of keyboard being played you ought to be able to narrow it down to exactly one year....
I've only gotten about 3 or 4 of these right so far. I'm pretty sure I have this, tho. This version really does smoke!
changing my focus - I heard Brent about 2 minutes in, the sparse piano playing gave me a false reading...

Okay though, something awesome just happened! So, I'm trying to sync up using archive.org - I just was listening to LIG from 12/26/81. It's pretty close but not the right show. I found, however, that parts of this recording and the one from 12/26/81 match up pretty well. You kind of have to reset it a few times (the timing is only slightly off from each other but that's the human element at work) but the first solo is amazing if you play both at the same time. Check it out!!
