This was a song that really benefitted from Brent’s B3 organ sound and his high, full harmony vocals. Unfortunately, it would remain in the repertoire only until the end of 1981.
An often overlooked year and era, at least for me. I'm usually happily surprised by the fiery rockin' jams that they got into. Brent got settled in nicely by this time. That 1st set, and the whole show actually looks pretty rippin'. Can't wait to run through that. Nothing like a Midwest Winter to get fiery jams to warm up the blood. First female mayor of this city at the time... no it's not Oprah. She's the Superior HIgh Commandress of the Universe.
Word verification?? That's new
Love the new 30 days of dead, would love it even more if we got an Eyes of the World and/or Terrapin Station this year.
But I'll be danged if I could pick a year -- 81/83. Think I'll be tumbling dice today.
Thanks for the great November! What a perfect start to my day....juicy jam to get me going, then on my way to see them in Madison, WI.
First time ever they played first AND second set sandwiches I believe. And oh what a second set.

I found the previous 30 daze with the Dead here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/266472/30%20Day ... 20Dead.zip. I'm not sure if the link is still alive, but it worked for me and the selections as well as quality of the recordings are top notch.
Don't you hear me!?
What a song. The B3 really pushed this song to the limits. It's too bad they put this one to bed shortly after this year.
Great show, some really good highlights worth checkin out. Thanks again Dave! Having so much fun playing the game :)
.. luckily I went right to it based on a hunch i.e. I found on 1st try by luck:)
can we still download the songs from last years 30 days of dead? If so, does anybody know the link? Thanks
One of the clues made me think if was from this show I was at yet I listened to 17 other ones before going with my first guess. I was at a show in this town just last night. Well a suburb thereof.
I was hoping that if this song appeared it would be
the one from the Stanley Theater in March of 1981.
Tuning up for Scarlet, Jerry's gear goes on the blink and the
rest of the band does a Little Feat style jam sans Jerry that
leaps into Passenger. Half way thru Jerry rejoins.
That should be a "Dave's Fav".
I remember being distracted by a beautiful demure shy townie chick and heading the wrong way downtown, but we soon turned around and got back on track. The bombs and newly found confidence of Brents twinkle showed me the way. Ive listened to about thirty Passengers and have a new appreciation for the song lol.
This show has a sick He's Gone with classic Jerry noodling and jamming with Brent.
But how slick would you be without a Deadbase in front of you?
That drum intro is a give away if you're trying to sync up.
"Listen to the whistle of the evenin' train..."
played from 77 to 81,, but Brent joined 4/22/79... so you can close the gap... sounds more like midwest or east show, not a west coast show... and most likely a first set tune.
According to Deadbase IX, they only played this tune from 5/15/77-12/27/81. I'm seeing posts about 81-89 on here. What am I missing???? haha
The Dead played many versions of this song during the Brent era, but there are some unique sounds on this tape that will show you the way. The drum intro of this Passenger is almost entirely unique. It was a joy to find.
the feedback sealed it for me... after the intro
The intro was how I found it too - I only stumbled across 1 other version that opened with that drum intro (although I didn't listen to *all* of them from the era).
There is only one other Passenger that has this same drum intro. Brent is also more reserved on his B3 during the opening bars of this version than on others. Jerry does some distinct slide work that also can be easily remembered.
they both have that drum into....i need to listen to them closer
ok...there is a big difference between the post drum info that i think sealed the deal for me....
Too clean to be a 79-87 two track, and the slide sounds a little better than earlier years from that time frame if it's Bobby. I'm aiming for 89ish? That's all I have without all of the resources cited on the message boards.
This is not an '89 show, and you would be surprised how good they can make those old two-tracks sound. Happy hunting.
I am really loving all the Brent stuff this time around!
WOW!! These free downloads r FREEKIN' KEEWWLL! They oughtta have 365 DAYS OF DEAD!! Why not? Everyone involved with the whole DEAD industry has made MAD MONEY with some change. I've contributed my tithes with 40+ Jerry-era shows under my belt. That's probably vapor compared to other HEADS, but I didn't get on the BUS 'til '89, wish it wuz sooner, but hey, at least I made it! My last LIVE DEAD experience wuz Columbus '10. The magic is still there! It's so nice to be able to get at least 1 summer DEAD experience per year, but health issues coupled with proximity of venues prevented me frum gettin' my FIX. These downloads help a bit, and I really do appreciate them! Oh wait, I digress, I've never experienced "Passenger" live, it's one of those tunes that was not a fav, but the powers that be chose this cut for a freebie, and I really like it! Keep up the GREAT WORK!!!!!! I look forward to a new selection each day. It'll be sad to see November go.
I haven't been to a good Dead/Ratdog concert since 2007. The travel time, expenses, and hit-or-miss performances of Ratdog got a little tiring. I was at a Ratdog show where they had the volume turned up so loud I had to leave at intermission for fear of permanent hearing damage (Tower Theater '09—if you were there, you know what I'm talking about). They also had played exactly four Bob Dylan covers by that point...
I haven't seen Furthur yet but I love their shows on the Archive. Maybe I will be within range of a good show in the future. Until then, thank God for the Archive, Road Trips, and the future Dave's Picks series.
What a great kick start in the morning...Going to ride the sunshine waves as a passenger all day...
Thanks DEAD.net
sounds like '81 to me, but I'm just trying to get close to the years all month...not doing so well though
Keep smilin' everyone
after this run b/c the venue was closed later that year due to maintenance issues. Hopefully it actually gets restored, noone builds like that anymore!
always got my feet movin. no such thing as a bad dead tune, interesting how they quit it though, everybody could rock out in it, you hear those drums near the end ? yeah yeah go man go
-next!
Nice :-)
ha. got it, once i got it ;)
funny huh?
Passenger is one of those songs that isn't a typical "Grateful Dead tune". I always enjoy it because, for one, the band can really let loose and kick it, and two, Jerry tends to lay down a ripping lead guitar line, usually with a fat, wah-wah tone. I don't mean to be unappreciative of the free download, and the work that went into making this available, but this isn't a great version of the song. The rest of the show is quite good though, one of the best from that year for sure.
Thanks guys
Hey all!! Deadhead here from Mississippi. I guess you could say I'm a Mississippi Hippie (okay, that was just ridiculous). Anyway I have been so enjoying this 30 Days of the Dead, and I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find the original 30 Days from last year? I have searched and searched, and all of the links I have found are old and dead (no pun intended man!) Any help would be much appreciated, and I hope everyone has a great holiday! Thankx!!
.
Yes Jambands europe is the way to go. None of the other ones will let you download. They are all great recordings too. The 2nd version of Easy Wind is one of my current favs. Its pretty damn dirty, worth finding and getting. I love 30 days of dead!!!!!
try this!
http://deadroots.net/
When I go to deadroots.net, the links to last year's songs no longer seem to work. I got my 33-song downloads from jambandseurope.com...great stuff, thanks folks! I love going to Windows Media Player, picking a starting point and just lettin' 'em play while I'm online; or creating a set list like chronological order.
It's the hottest song that didn't survive!!
...And who's out-front? ...Not just pickin' up slack, but pushin'!
Yep... Brent!

Seriously hoping for an Eyes to wake up to....
Thanks Dave! You have the best job in the world!
